Our Mission to Save the Bees

Traceability

BEE&YOU embraces a unique model of beekeping called Contracted Beekeeping. Each and every beekeeper who’s willing to partner with us has to agree to follow strict standards such as never using sugar or derivatives as a feed and placing their hives certain distances away from industrial sites. In return Bee&You promises to purchase their entire harvest, at a fair rate. The products are then double checked for their purity, biological activity and quality in our labs by a team of professional food scientists and chemists.

By imposing this contract, we make sure that our honeybees are healthy, treated without cruelty and away from harmful toxins and chemicals. It also gives us full traceability and transparency over our raw materials and products, where they came from, who harvested them and under what conditions they are produced.

Sustainability

Sustainability is another key practice at BEE&YOU. As beekeepers ourselves, we fully understand the importance of honey bees, their role in natural pollination and how crucial it is to keep them alive and thriving for the health of our  ecosystem.

That’s why we always agree to pay fair prices to our beekeepers for their harvest, so they treat their bees humanely and don’t have to resort to animal cruelty for financial gains. We only work with beekeepers who strictly follow the rules and use the best practices for the sustainability of the bees.

Giving Back to Our Community

From each BEE&YOU purchase, we make a donation to our community of beekepers, in the form of new tools and equipments. This not only creates a further incentive for them to prefer us as their customers but also gives them an extra financial support to keep the traditional beekeeping practices alive and treat their  fairly. It’s a triple win scenario where both us, the beekeepers and the bees benefits.

Two Bee Superfoods You Haven’t Heard Before

When it comes to bee products, honey is the first thing that comes to mind. Although very commonly used, I believe it’s the least significant product that comes out of a hive. Honeybees offer much more complex and unique foods with higher nutrient density, yet they are rare to come by. Propolis and Royal Jelly are two to mention.

What is Propolis

The word is made out of pro and polis, translating into front and city respectively. This is a reference to the fact that propolis is a colony’s first line of defense against pathogens. It’s a sticky, resinous plant material collected by the bees to cover up their hive in order to prevent the microbes penetrating in. It’s a very rich source of antioxidants and exhibits antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties.

What is it good for?

The very compounds that show antimicrobial effects, flavonoids, phenolics and terpenes few to mention, are also the ones that are responsible for it’s health benefits. However propolis has a very low bioavailability in it’s natural state and needs to be extracted with alcohol. This process is crucial to get rid of the impurities & beeswax and make the beneficial compounds available.

Propolises effects on strengthening the immune system has been well researched (1). Other studies also show promising effects on tumor cells (2) and various cancers, including leukimea (3), colon cancer (4) and prostate cancer (5).

What is Royal Jelly and what is it good for?

Royal jelly is a white, jelly like bee secretion for the purpose of exclusively feeding the queen bees. Although the workers only survive for about 45 days, the queen bee grows two times bigger in size and lives up to 5-7 years while laying up about 2000 eggs a day. Royalactin, the main active protein, is responsible for the longevity of the queen. Royal Jelly shows potent anti-aging effects, especially on skin. It increases internal collagen production (6) and protects the skin from UV rays (7). Another active component unique to Royal Jelly, 10-HAD, also exhibits anti-cancer effects while inhibiting tumor growth (8).

Although the medicinal benefits of these two compounds were known since ancient Egypt and Greece, they have been absent in our modern diet, mostly due to inaccessibility. They also require an intensive process to create and are naturally produced in very small quantities. Further, both propolis and royal jelly are crucial for a bee colony’s health and well-being since they are both food and protection respectively. That’s why they should absolutely be harvested in a sustainable manner to keep the hive healthy.

Bee Pollen: A Nutritious Addition to Your Diet

Upgrade your vitamin & mineral intake with bee pollen! Pollen is the reproductive organs of plants and is considered the be the sole “whole food’ in the world. It is utilized in the hive to feed the baby bees and is the source of dietary protein for the worker bees. Besides, it is also a natural source of antioxidants as well as other macro and micronutrients.

Along with its protein, fiber, vitamin, mineral, and antioxidant-rich nature, BEE&YOU pollen is also specifically rich in vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, E, C, and folic acid, biotin, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and zinc. It’s a great all-natural addition for a healthy diet, and its recommended intake is 2-4 tsp for adults and 1-2 for kids, eaten directly or mixed into warm or cold food.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) is responsible for regulating the overall metabolism, energy promotion, and helping the formation of new tissue, including red blood cells and skin cells. One hundred grams of BEE&YOU pollen contains 2 mg of vitamin B2 (Riboflavin). Two tbsp provides almost 46% and 55% of riboflavin RDA value for healthy male and female adults, respectively, at ages 19-50.

Iron helps energy production in the body, reduce fatigue, optimize oxygen circulation, and forming new red blood cell and hemoglobin while supporting the immune system. One hundred grams of BEE&YOU pollen contains 13 mg of iron, and 2 tbsp provides almost 48% and 22% of RDA value for healthy male and female adults in ages 19-50, respectively.

BEE&YOU bee pollen is also an excellent pre and post-workout snack with its high protein content, reaching up to 20% while including all amino acids. It’s a great way to increase muscle protein synthesis, reduce muscle catabolism, and recover better after workouts.

Benefits of Propolis, Apple Cider Vinegar, Cinnamon, Ginger and Turmeric

Food engineer (M.Sc.) and propolis expert Mrs. Aslı Elif Tanuğur Samancı said that propolis is a resin-like natural bee product that is collected from the leaves, stems, and buds of the plants, exhibiting potent antioxidant properties in addition to it antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal activities. Therefore, propolis is a precious complementary supplement to treat cold and flu symptoms, especially during seasonal changes when used regularly and daily.

Samanci provided specific examples of scientific studies, particularly on the use of propolis for upper-respiratory-tract infections; a study carried out at Ohio State University in 2006 investigated the efficiency of propolis in 81 children between ages 5 to 10 showing upper respiratory tract infections. The results of the  study revealed that propolis extract reduced the number of cases, the severity of symptoms and the disease period.

Pediatrician Prof. Dr. Ateş Kara stated that; “honey can have an antibacterial activity only when it is raw.  Raw honey is 100% natural honey, preserving all its nutritious content when no heating or filtration steps are used.   In general, every child has viral upper-respiratory-tract infection 6 to 8 times a year.  Almost 74% of children suffer from cough, throat pain, and itchy throat.   I do recommend to my patients to use propolis and raw honey to reduce the severity of symptoms of the infection and the number of sick days. When they use propolis and raw honey regularly, I do observe that symptoms of the infection are reduced quickly.  Raw honey contains amino acids, vitamins of A, C, E and B-complex, folic acid, iron, zinc, and antioxidant compounds, such as polyphenols and flavonoids. Due to the presence of those compounds,  raw honey has antiviral, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties”.

Prof. Dr. Ateş Kara also added that there are thousands of scientific research on raw honey published in various databases that are followed by physicians and researchers. He said that “an article published by the American Medical Association in 2007 evaluated the efficiency of raw honey in children with upper-respiratory-tract infection. Raw honey administered to 105 children between ages 2-18 reduced the episodes of night coughs and improved sleeping quality. The scientists concluded that raw honey can be recommended as a supplement.  Such studies show us that raw honey can be beneficial as a complementary supplement in the treatment of upper-respiratory-tract infection.”

Dietitian Dilara Koçak especially emphasized the significance of regular antioxidant intake during body detoxification. “Products such as propolis, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, and apple vinegar containing high amounts of antioxidants, phenolics and flavonoids, need to be included in a diet regularly. When diet is insufficient from antioxidants, it is more likely that  those persons will suffer from various health problems in the future.”

Dilara finally added, “I always add antioxidant-rich foods into the diets of my clients. Propolis is always the first food on my recommendation list. Also, I do not want to skip the significance of apple vinegar due to its support to detoxify the body.  One of my recipes involves a mixture of 2 tbsp apple vinegar, 1 tbsp cinnamon, and ten drops of propolis in yogurt. This recipe is particularly a good snack for the ones experiencing the flactuation of their serum glucose levels. I particularly recommend the consumption of raw honey together with propolis, ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon due to a synergistic effect of those ingredients in combination. Vitamin C in ginger and turmeric also improves the absorption of propolis by the human body. I advise to take those foods exhibiting anti-carcinogenic properties regularly in our diet to protect ourselves against cancer.”

Boost your Kids Immunity with Propolis

Propolis, as a natural bee product coming from hive, plays an important role in supporting the immune system with its high antioxidant activity.

Propolis is a natural bee product that the bees collect from the stems, buds and leaves of plants with high antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Bees use it for the sterilization of hive. The Co-Founder and General Manager of BEE&YOU Propolis, Food Engineer MSc. Asli Elif Tanugur Samanci explained what is propolis and why it is important for children’s health and nutrition.

Samanci said that “There are mainly phenolic and flavonoid substances in the natural composition of propolis. These bioactive components are responsible for many health benefits of propolis. Propolis prevents the growth of bacteria, fungi and viruses with its high antimicrobial activity. It also shows anti-inflammatory properties. Propolis can be used as a support for the treatment of many diseases with these health promoting effects. Also, it strengthens the immune system on regular consumption by increasing the antibody production in the body. However, propolis cannot be produced in its raw form. In order to be suitable for human consumption, it should go through extraction process. This procedure must be carried out by experts in appropriate conditions.”

Samancı added that “In school period, an increase in the frequency of illness is observed among children. Pathogenic factors that children exposed to in crowded environments like nursery, school, especially affects the children with low immunity. Therefore, it is important to support the children’s immune system. Propolis is a bee product that can be used to increase the immune system of children in a completely natural way. Scientific studies show that propolis strengthens immunity and protects against diseases. In a research conducted in Ohio State University in 2006, the effects of mixture containing propolis against upper respiratory tract infections were investigated. It was found that, propolis mixture decreased the number of episodes of infection, duration of symptoms and number of illness days. In addition to these scientific results, we receive lots of health related positive feedbacks from our consumers. Children who consume propolis regularly have a significantly lower frequency of illness and recover more quickly in case of diseases.”

Our Awarded Immune and Energy Support

Our tabs provide you with agreat choice to consume propolis, royal jelly, and pollen in an all-in-one product

in the form of a tablet.

Propolis is a resin-like bee product with high antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiinflammatory and antitumor effects that the bees collect from the leaves, stems, and buds of the plants. It is a natural immune support. Royal jelly is a another valuable bee product which is excreted by worker bees to feed baby bees and the queen bee in the hive. The queen bee, the only one on an exclusive diet of royal jelly in the colony, grows two times bigger and lives 30 times longer than other bees. Scientific studies show that royal jelly supports brain activity, the health of female and male ovaries, cardiovascular health, immune system, increases collagen synthesis, enhances energy and physical performance. Besides, pollen is referred to as reproductive cells of plants. It is a natural source of protein, vitamin and minerals.

BEE&YOU Ultra Strength Tablet is a natural mixture of propolis, royal jelly and pollen without added sugar, fat, preservatives or any chemical additives. It is suggested to consume two tablets, preferably between meals. It has also a “chewable” form flavored with cocoa, especially developed for children. It was awarded by Sustainable Food Awards, in “Sustainable New Product” category, in Amsterdam on June 2019.

Since raw propolis is not suitable for human consumption, it is subjected to an extraction process. In BEE&YOU Ultra Strength Tablet, propolis is extracted with innovative award-winning extraction method, which creates at least three times higher biological activity than that of similar products. Also, BEE&YOU produces this product with “Contracted Beekeeping Model. In this model, a contract is signed with beekeepers which eliminated a need for distributors acting as middlemen between honey packagers and the beekeepers, that provides “Fair Trade”.
